  1. An infection will cause a fever, or an overactive thyroid. There is little else that will cause a fever.

  2. Stress does not cause a fever in a person that does not have some underlying medical condition.  Fevers are almost always caused by an infection, but there are also several medical conditions that cause chronic or intermittent  fevers - the causes are the same regardless of age.   But in some people with a medical condition such as rheumatoid arthritis or hyperthyroidism, stress can aggravate the conditions and cause a fever.   You would not likely have any of these types of medical conditions without already knowing it because they cause much more than a fever.

Hot skin is a different story.   Hot skin (flushing) sometimes makes people think they have a fever, and this can be casued  by stress, anxiety, self-consciousness, allergies, and hot stuffy air.   Flushing is very common in teenagers.

  3. Stress does not cause a fever. A fever is the bodies reaction to bacteria that has entered the body. The body heats itself up trying to kill the germs that have invaded. The infection could be any huge number of things.

  4. While we may not look at it this way, fevers are actually (usually) a good thing.

Fevers are your bodies defense mechanism to fight infections.

We all know that our normal body temperature is 98.6 F.  That is the temperature at which an average, normal, healthy human is measured.  However, when we have some type of an infection, that body temperature typically rises.  This is a means to fight the infection.  These infections or illnesses are caused by an infinite number of bacteria or viruses.  If our immune system didn't fight the infection, we would just die.  It could be something complicated like pneumonia, or something as simple as a cold or the flu.

Now, what causes this?  To go into a little more depth, our blood and lymphatic system produces white blood cells which fight off infections.  When we have an infection, we develop more white blood cells, to fight.  They rapidly begin to attack the germs, thus causing heat in the form of a fever by effecting the hypothalamus which regulates our body heat.  A fever below about 101 F is usually not bad, it just means that our body is fighting.  However, if the fever remains for a long period of time, or it rises too high, that is when we have cause for alarm.  That means our body needs more help, which we can get from a doctor.  However, unless instructed by a doctor, we should not try to bring down a fever too fast or too much.

Remember that in the beginning, I stated that fevers are usually a good thing.  If they get too high (104F and above), they can start to do damage to our nervous system.

It is important that we get checked by a doctor when we get a fever.  Because, even though it is most likely something simple, it could be one of our first clues to something much worse, like leukemia.

Make sure that you get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluids, and get to a doctor!!  Chances are that it will be something simple, and the doctor can really help you out.  I hope all is well.
