I frequently get Charlie Horses in my left calf after the muscle has been relaxed, and I move (if it's even the slightest movement). They are extremely painful, and becoming more frequent...is there a known cause? How can I prevent them?

  1. Drink lots more water, they can be caused by being dehydrated, they can also be caused by a deffeciancy in pottasium, calcium, magensium and sodium.

  2. Often the cause of charlie horse isn't identifiable, but some possible causes include electrolyte imbalance.  Eat a balanced diet, take some multivitamins regularly, and drink plenty of water and try to avoid dehydration.

When you get a charlie horse, immediately point your foot upward. Try putting your hand on the top of your foot, and then point your foot upward so that it presses against your hand.  This tightens muscles in the front of your leg and relaxes the calf muscle that is in spasm.  Gently stroke the muscle in spasm to encourage it to relax.

If you have any tendency to stretch in bed or while asleep, try to train yourself to stretch without pointing your toes, as pointing your toes can produce this painful spasm, especially if you're prone to this type of spasm.

  3. your body is in need of some natural nutrients probably potasium. Do you do a lot of athletics or walking during the day? Try takeing a vitamin suplement for your age gruop.
