Usually is the need to control strategic resources.

Strategic resources can be widely different: oil, water, land, sea, raw materials, or also places that are strategic for expansion and self defence from a military point of view

Panama intervention was to keep control on the strategic Panama Channel, in the hands of an uncontroll able former allied (Noriega), such as was Suez war for the control of Suez channel: the strategic resource was, in this case, geographic: an easy and cheap passage between seas had to be kept open.

China taking Tibet (immediately before India: they will have made it) , , Kippur war and the occupied territories by Israel, are water related wars: to control the scarce water resources of the area

Iraq war, Afghanistan intervention, Georgian invasion and all the next to come are related to oil, and the passage (in Afghanistan, and countries of the former Soviet Union) of the pipelines: who cont rols the area controls the oil  and its transportation via pipelines.

There are many  "official" reasons for wars: save the democracy, free oppressed brothers of our same nationality, conquer the motherland occupied by barbarians, defend the Faith: at the end there is always an economic and strategic issue: an issue about power and control .

Meanwhile, you cannot ask to the people that actually die in the war, nor to the people that has to vote your war government to do it for something so far from their lives and values as oil or control : so government use the leverage of nationalism, values, fears of being under attack, faith, to increase involvement and approval rate
