Question:

What causes iron deficent anaemia - where injections (not oral supplements are required?)

All I can think of is some type of malabsorbtion syndrome, do you know:

1) What types of malabsorbtion syndromes?

2) Other causes for some1 to require iron injections for anaemia?

(ps- pls dont write up the causes of all dif anaemia, am just focusing on this question for now, thanks :)

  1. Some people can't cope with iron tablets very well (constipation etc.).

    People with some bowel diseases (Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Short Bowel Syndrome etc.) may not absorb iron so well.

    People whose red cells don't survive as long as normal (eg. auto-immune haemolytic anaemia, haemaglobinopathies etc.)

    People who have had a recent large blood loss and they are trying to get their haemaglobin levels back to normal quickly without blood transfusion.

    People with chronic blood loss (eg. heavy periods)

    Pregnant or lactating women who are iron deficient.

                          -are some examples.
