Question:

What causes pixelization on a HD satellite receiver?

I have a Hi-Def satellite receiver with Star Choice. It's the DVR530 HD. I USUALLY get pixelization whenever I play back something I've recorded. If I watch that program as I'm recording it, it's FINE. But when I play it back it's choppy & pixelated. Star Choice has already sent me 2 replacement units. What I want to know is, what causes this pixelization and is there any way to stop it?

  1. I've seen it based on:

    1)  The channel they broadcast on.  Sometimes they lower the bitrate for certain channels.

    2)  The box.  Sometimes, my playback is erratic if I am recording other shows in HD.  Try tuning your channels to things like the radio stations

    3)  The signal.  A low signal will be recorded as pixelation (lossy imaging).
