What causes red eye in photos?

I was looking through some old photos and saw a few had red eye and was wonder what causes it. So what causes red eye

red eye is caused by light reflecting off the retina which is a network of nerves in the back of the eye, so there is blood there. if the flash is on the same plane as the lens, the light bounces directly back into the lens and the retina becomes visible in the photo so the blood shows through causing red-eye.

It's  because the flash happens to quick for the pupil to close and  this light reflects off the fundus but first it goes  through the eye and out of the pupil and the camera gets this reflection of light. The red-eye effect is occurs because the color of the fundus( which is at the back of the eye) not blood supply of the retina.

i think its  the bouncing reflexion off the back of the retena. try not to look directly into the camera flash when you take a picture.

"red eye" effect is caused by the intense light of the camera reflecting on the pigmented layer of the retina.

   The retina is the layer of the eye on which the images are formed, and transformed into information that will be forwarded to the brain for processing.

   The retina's outer layer is a pigmented layer (its cells are loaded with a brown-reddish pigment), it serves as a sort of obscure-chamber (like the ones photographers use to develop photos taken on film) and helps the image to form on the retina by preventing the surrounding light to enter the eye (from another parts than the pupil) and make the image on the retina less clear.
