What causes speckled and multi-coloured eyes?

Is there a genetic explanation for having more than one eye colour in one eye? My mother has grayish blue eyes and my father has pale greenish yellow eyes, and while my two siblings have my mom's gray-blue eyes, my eyes are dark blue around the outside with paler gray-blue inside and a prominent ring of yellow/gold/ and pale green, plus gold flecks throughout. Why is this?
