  1. Because air behind the cold front is colder and more dense it pushes the warmer and less dense air out ahead of it upward.  If there is enough moisture present a line or multiple lines of showers and thunderstorms can develop.  As the air is rising once it reaches the dew point temperature the moisture condenses and produces clouds.  If there is enough instability in the atmosphere thunderstorms will develop as well.

  2. When cold front approaches,it actively displaces the warmer air at the surface.Cold fronts have a steep slope(1/40 to 1/80) with the result, the warmer air is pushed upwrds creating a vertical motion. This makes the warmer air rise and cool leading to condensation and formation of clouds(if enough moisture is there) which finally results in precipitation. The vertical motion of the cold front will be more vigorous(leading to formation of thunderstorm) if the front is moving faster and the conditional instability of the uplifted warm air is greater.
