What causes the calm before the storm?

  1. There is no calm before a storm. As a low pressure moves near you, the wind will increase as the isobar gradients tightens.

    But a local isolated thunderstorm may feel like this: First, a mild wind blows toward the center of the fast rising cell. It feeds the intense low pressure building up. Then it stops and suddenly a strong wind gust comes in the opposite direction; the micro-burst of the air falling down. If you are e.g. sailing in a light boat, watch for those signs; the tell-tale anvil-like clouds, the light breeze blowing toward it followed by a short calm. Get your sails down before it hits you.
