  1. BlueSB explained perfectly! So here is the color. It is my favorite color!! The 1st one is the stud I'm going to breed to my mare.

    Thank you BSB!!! He's Morgan. As you didn't know that! LOL Just had to add that..... LOL

  2. Just the way the coat is. It's pretty huh!

  3. The Dun gene acts somewhat like a dilution but with countershading like dorsal stripe, leg bars etc. Typically youll get a Grulla/Grullo when you breed a black horse and a dun. (not always) The Dun gene carries over and dilutes the black to more of a grey/blue. Same with Red Duns (diluted chestnut)

  4. Black + Dun = Grulla

    So......

    E, aa, CC, dd, gg, ww, toto

    E, aa, CC, D, gg, ww, toto

    E=  horse has ability to form black pigment in the skin & hair.  Black pigment in hair may be either in a points pattern or distributed overall.

    aa=  If horse has black hair (E), then that black hair is uniformly distributed over body & points. (A) has no effect on red (ee) pigment.

    CC=  Horse is fully pigmented

    dd=  horse has undiluted coat color

    D= Horse shows a diluted body color to pinkish-red, yellow-red, yellow or mouse gray & has dark points including doral stripe, shoulder stripe & leg barring

    gg=  Horse does not show progressive silvering with age

    ww=  Horse is full pigmented.

    toto=  No tobiano pattern present

    Mind you, this is some info from UC Davis that I had in our records here.  With all of the changes & new advances in science, this may be out of date.  Or, I could have read it wrong!!!

    Found some other stuff:

    GENES are the W, G, E, A, C, D, TO

    ALLELES are the W, w, G, g, E, e, A, a, C, Ccr, D, d, TO, to

    example:  WW:  lethal

              Ww:  Horse typically lacks pigment in skin, hair & eyes & appears to be white.

              ww:  Horse is fully pigmented.

    **EDIT**

    American:  He is beautiful!!!!

  5. Badger hit the nail on the head with that one. I the only thing anyone could add to that is if they knew the stud and had it blood typed to know it would throw that color.  I can't add anything but, I like that stud too, and I would like to get a baby from that as well.

    To Proud- Your use of the terms is text book correct, but no one seperates male and female as Grulla/Grullo. I have owned two grulla's in my life one was a mare the other was a gelding. You just call the color grulla. Again Text book correct, but I have seen term in recent text books that are 50 years out of date. I am not puttin you down, just saying I have never heard anyone use grullo to discribe the color. And I personly love them mexican colors, duns, buckskins grulla's. Yummy.
