  1. Flames are luminous for the reason, that they emit atoms, this  process of atom emission occurs  within the combustion zone. Bits of sodium (yellow-orange, the most common color of a flame) will be atomized and excited into an upper atomic electronic state in the flame. When these excited states relax back to their ground state, intense colored light is emitted.
