What causes the moon to look red during a lunar eclipse?

  1. The light that gets scattered by Earths atmosphere. Just the same process which make the sun turning red during sunset or sunrise. While the direct light to the moon is blocked by Earth, the scattered light can still fill a region behind Earth.
