What causes the top of a tree to die ?

There are dead areas at the top of our two large trees in the back yard. (the leaves never came back this spring) Why would the top die off? Will it grow back? Does it have something to do with the roots? Not enough water?

Could be a number of causes. Insect attack, unfavourable weather conditions or old age. Need more info. (type,age, situation) about trees to help.

the tree won't die just cut the dead areas and they should grow back
