Heat causes tropical depressions.  They are large low pressure areas.  Low pressure areas rotate counter clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere.  They follow the tradewinds from Africa to the Americas.  The classification "Tropical Depression" is the least of the areas of interest.  If the pressue in it drops and the wind velocity increases, it gets reclassified as a Tropical Storm.  If the pressure gets low enough and the winds high enough it becomes a hurricane.
