What causes thunder and lightning?

Hi i know this is a random questions its thunder and lightning where I am staying right Now and I was wondering what Thunder and lightning actually was as there is practically nothing in the sky so what can cause this?? only clouds... what makes the sound?? and what makes the light?

  1. Lightning is caused the buildup of oppositely charged electrostatics. When the electrostatic force between two sets of charge is large enough, then one set of charge is accelerated through a potential difference towards the other set of charge. The charged particles get 'excited' and emit photons at visible wavelengths, which allows the human eye to see the bolt(s) of lightning.

    Thunder is the sonic boom that results from lightning. Lightning has a high current value and it is extremely hot. Lightning heats the surrounded to an estimated 18,000°F or 10,000°C. Such tremendous amounts of heat rapidly expand air. The sonic boom itself is what you are hearing.


  2. The light is a stream of electrons going from earth to ground or ground to earth.

    The3 sound is due to superheating of the air around the lightning bolt.  The sound is caused by rapid expansion exceeding the sound barrier
