  1. lightning rapidly increases the temperature of the surrounding air and this expansion (due to heat) disrupts the air resulting in thunder


  2. Thunder is a tremendous shockwave caused by intense heating by lightning, which sends sound waves in every direction. These sound waves bounce off of buildings and other stuff which gives thunder more of a bang.
