This started before she was ever tacked up. My vet suggested a copper deficiency, but adding it hasn't helped.

  1. If the tack fits her incorrectly it can cause rubs, and the hair grows back white.  If she has white spots where there isn't tack (or if you are absolutely 100% sure the tack fits correctly) they could just be freckles from the sun.  However, I would ask an experienced friend or instructor to look at your horse for an exact answer.

  2. Sounds like what you are describing is vitiligo. I don't think the cause of it has ever been precisely identified and there is nothing I know of which can cure it. I think you should point it out to your vet but if it is vitiligo he/she will tell you that it is harmless and not to worry about it. I have a couple horses which have vitiligo spots but it really can't be seen unless they are wet or if I probe the dry hair to find it. I'm not sure if it will ever affect the color of the hair growing from the spots but it hasn't so far.

  3. This is caused by tack that doesnt fit the horse.

Get a saddle and bridle fitter out to check!

  4. White hair simply means that the hair follicle has been compromised. This usually occurs by constant rubbing of the area. Not sure about the neck and shoulders unless there is something rubbing them.
