  2. You are asking the US, one of the worst for CO2 to advise other countries?  When we burn gas or oil, we are consuming life from millions of years ago and releasing CO2 into the air.  When we burn wood we are consuming life from the last 200 years and releasing CO2 into the air.  Each should be looked at as a temporary short or long term storage of CO2.  If we grow more trees than we burn, we are storing CO2.  If we cut trees for use as houses or furniture we continue the storage for a few more years.  Our goal in manging global warming is to stop releasing CO2 from either short or long term storage.  Or to find a way to capture and store released CO2 for long periods.  If you try to determine the beneficial effects of saving or cutting a tree without taking this process into consideration, you will be comparing the weight of a pound of feathers with a pound of gold, it never makes any sense.

  3. They should always be replaced with trees of the same species, and in the same numbers. Really, the only trees that should be cut down are plantation trees commercially grown for building or paper production. Old growth forests should be left alone.
