We want to add another dimension to our stall at some agriculture shows etc. I assume we can't just turn up and sell food?

  1. I think you need a trader's license to sell food to the general public. I would enquire at the local authority where you intend to sell. I think they will do a temporary one for you.

  2. I used to have an outside catering business and you will certainly have to have a food hygiene certificate, then you will have to have all the equipment and the stall inspected by and passed by Environmental Health officers.

If you are doing hot food you will need fridges for storage of the raw products, at least two basins for washing, one for equipment and the other for hand washing.

I have been out of the business for several years now and I stopped because of all the regulations that were being brought in.

What I suggest is go and talk to the Environmental Heath dept at your local council.

  3. You will have to clear it with the events organisors there is usually a limit on food stands. You would have to pay for the pitch, could be up to £100 a day. You will need to have your stall cleared by the Environmental Health and Health & Hygiene. You will need public liability Insurance. Firstly phone up your local council and get advice from them.

  4. You will need to register as a food business at wherever you keep your stall.

The EHOs will expect you to have a food hygiene certificate but this is usually a one day course.

Hot food is more of a problem as you will need to keep it hot enough. Rice is a big problem - people don't look at it as a food poisoning risk and keep large amounts warm for ages - can get bacillus cereus, causes vomiting
