We will be using it to cut approximately one log truck full of hardwoods each year (enough to heat our home) and that's about it. We won't be cutting down trees with it. We want one that will last a long time with proper maintenance. The biggest log we expect to cut is around 16 inches. Looking for $400 or less. We have decided on Husq. or Stihl. Give me some model numbers that you recommend and why.

  1. i recommend u try to find whatever brand leatherface used. His chainsaw could even cut through bone. Maintenance will  prolly be quite easy on it :)

  2. Way,way, way back then it was inexpensive (sorta) Homelite. But dad loved his Stihl as a more trouble free machine. We used to cut pulp wood in Wi and they got some extreme use.Today I just buy throw aways (Homelight) at home Depot for $150 and when they shoot the big one replace.

    Good Luck

  3. Husq or Stihl, both great saws.. I have a Husq Rancher with a 20" bar, I don't have to bend over as far ( all day bucking up cordwood and that extra 2"s really saves your back at the end of the day.. stay  with a professional saw ... I paid about $400 12 yrs ago and the price is still the same and I do the same thing, and when I get a log length load  it's about 4 cord.. I'd like to see if that $150 Walmart or Depot saw would last cutting cord wood for 8-10 hours straight........

  4. Ask your saw shop for their recommendation. That way you have shop support if you need it. Either brand is good, go with the longer bar and a heavier duty engine. It saves wear and tear on the chain and will lessen the amount of sharpening you will need to do.
