What chance do Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Luke Donald stand at WGC-HSBC Champions?
Whenever Tiger Woods is playing an event, his name is right up at the top of the title contenders. Tiger Woods has had a very successful year, from a neutral point of view.
However, what makes him unhappy is that he could not win a major this year. WGC-HSBC Champions is right around the corner and Tiger Woods has the chance to end the season on a high note.
Tiger Woods has been making some decent progress, recently. However, he played a pathetic Ryder Cup, winning only half a point out of a possible four for his team.
Nevertheless, recently in the Turkish Airways World Golf Finals, he defeated Rory McIlroy, which clearly shows that he still has golf left in himself.
Tiger’s all round game is well suited for the Olazabal course at Mission Hills. Woods has been playing tremendous golf throughout the year but it is his finishes that are giving him some problems.
If the former world number one can display a consistent form and finish the tournament well, then there can only be excellent results for him.
Tiger would want to finish the season on a high, so that he starts the next season full of confidence and energy.
Phil Mickelson, too, has had a decent year. He won at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Apart from that, there is not much to cheer about Phil Mickelson.
He played an average game at the Ryder Cup but China is one place he loves to play. The current world number sixteen has won the WGC-HSBC Champions twice and he would surely love to win a record third time.
However, lately, his form has been fluctuating. He started the FedEx Cup Playoffs decently but at the Tour Championship and the Ryder Cup, he looked just a little out of sorts.
His last round performance at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am is by far the round of the year and he needs to shoot such rounds at the Mission Hills to have any chance of winning the WGC-HSBC Champions for a record third time.
Luke Donald started the year brightly, but then lost his world number one title to Rory McIlroy in the middle of the year. However, it has been a topsy turvy ride for the Englishman this season.
Donald was the favourite to win the Open Championship this year, but for some reason the former world number one could win a major.
However, he can finish the season on a high note, by winning the WGC-HSBC Champions. He has been in good form lately.
He contributed to his team’s success, winning points for the Ryder Cup for his team. If he can somehow continue the way he played last year, then he certainly stands a chance at this year’s WGC-HSBC Champions 2012.
