I'm going to Costa RIca in June, and I was wondering if there were any extra shots I should get? I'm up to date on all my normal ones, and I got a malaria shot, is there anything else I should get? What are the chances of becoming ill there? I'm going for a week.

  1. precautions when traveling to remote areas. If you decide to take precautions in this regard, it's best to do so 2 to 3 weeks before your departure. Many passengers ask about Malaria pills. Although we are not doctors, we do not recommend taking Malaria pills unless you are planning on being in a remote or high-risk area. Please consult your physician as well as the CDC's website for the latest updates when planning your trip to Costa Rica.

  3. No, you do not NEED anything. The local population here receives national health care coverage, so the overall population has had some immunizations. They are very healthy people in general. The water is safe to drink from the taps in most places as there is a large abundance of fresh water sources. 97% of the homes in the country have potable water so they are not living in low standard conditions that cause the diseases in 3 world nations.  Costa Rica is very developed, especially compared to its northern neighbours in Nicaragua. I have lived here now for 8 months and i did not get any Extra shots to come down here.

Honestly, I would be more prepared for the thieves in this country, they are the only real disease. Don't be careless and leave valuables in easy reach of quick hands.
