What changes Los Angeles Lakers needed to bring the championship rings back – NBA Report
After getting thrown out of the 2011 playoffs second-round there were several speculations that the Los Angeles Lakers will bring some crucial changes in their team that will help them get back on the track.
The Lakers lost 0-4 against the current National Basketball Association champions Dallas Mavericks. With that, the franchise just didn’t lose the championship rings, but they failed to give a befitting farewell to their Hall of
Fame coach Phil Jackson, who announced his retirement earlier.
With the departure of Jackson, the Lakers will now also have to bid adieu to their triangle offense strategy. In the days following the Lakers defeat, former Cleveland Cavaliers coach Mike Brown emerged from a long list of candidates
to become the new coach of the franchise and immediately made his intentions clear about the famed offensive tactic.
This was also the reason why Buss didn’t promote assistant coach Brain Shaw in Jackson’s place, even though L.A.’s All-Star Kobe Bryant endorsed Shaw as the next coach.
Brown on the other hand is famous defensive strategies, which is now going to be the new course for the Lakers. However, to follow the theory of Brown completely, it is important for the Lakers to get a skilful player at the point
guard position, who can pierce through the defences of the opposition and get to the basket more often or can dribble effectively.
The management at L.A. is completely aware of the need and therefore they picked up two point guards Darius Morris and Andrew Goudelock as their second-round pick from the 2011 NBA Draft. However, these two require more games and
training sessions with the veteran players and the coaching staff at L.A. in order to groom their skills.
However, that cannot happen for the time being because the league had enforced lockout on the players. This not only barred them from contacting the front office staff members, but also impedes them from using the franchise facilities
until the lockout doesn’t end.
So when the lockout will get over the Lakers wouldn’t be able to get the best out of them, as they wouldn’t be ready to compete at such a high level. This left the Lakers with the option to sign a star player at the point guard
position. There is a possibility that Los Angeles may pursue Derron Williams and Chris Paul when they will test the free agency market.
However, the analysts also suggest that a medium level of point guard like Kirk Hinrich can fulfil the need of the Lakers at point guard position, if they can land Orlando Magic’s dazzling centre Dwight Howard in their side to
rebuild the core of their team.
The need to drag a star in the core was suggested because both Steve Blake and Captain Derrick Fisher looked aged in the previous season and you can imagine how they will look playing under Brown’s up tempo game plan.
Some might say that Blake have the capability to play an up tempo game, but it is pretty evident from the previous performances of Steve that defensively he struggles against bigger, faster and more supple point guards.
Therefore the need of the hour is to strengthen their roster the Lakers shouldn’t spend much money on acquiring a star point guard. Instead they should go for medium level one and pursue Howard seriously in order to form a strong
inside with the inclusion of some fresh blood that will give them a dominant post player and help them win the championship as well.
As the core of the Lakers is still one of the best in the entire league that comprises of Kobe, Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum.
