  1. 5% CO?  Are you sure??

Anyway, the animal ceases breathing because it dies.  CO binds to hemoglobin about 1000 times more efficiently than oxygen.  With the hemoglobin stuck on CO, it is not carrying oxygen.  Without oxygen delivered to the tissues, the animal dies.

  2. the rate of ventilation will be higher, since a lot of haemoglobin will be destroyed by the CO, you'll need to raise the frequency in order to maintaining the same oxygen intake.
