Both of these projects are usually handled by the local food banks.

Catholic Charities also handles this, and they give to anyone, not just Catholics.   They are one of the best charity organizations out there.

There are many schools in Kentucky that need backpacks/suplise. Contact The Pencil project and she can let you know of schools in Appalachia.

I would go to the schoolteachers lounge at the nearest schools and ask which kids have no supplies.  You could look the child in the eye when delivering the backpack.  They would be thrilled.

You could follow up with this child's family at Christmas time.
