  1. Mc Donaolds s a nice place to eat.

  2. I have not yet been to Paris, but I will be there for one month this summer. I have been doing some research and here are some tips that I have read:

Eating while standing at the bar in a cafe is cheaper than sitting inside. A table outside is the most expensive option.

I have heard that wine is cheaper than soda.

Many museums are half off during their last two hours of operation, and I know there is one day a month when they are all free.

Avoid tourist areas when dining, any place with an english menu tends to be more expensive.

There is excellent ethnic food and little food stands on the street that won't break your wallet.

Parks are free!! In the summer, there are often outdoor music concerts...

Picnic-- baguettes are cheap and you can pick up some cheese or veggies at an outdoor market.

I am a poor college student, so I am planning on sticking to these things as well!

  3. Many of the most famous tourist attractions don't cost anything.

Notre Dame, Sacre Coeur, and many other historic churchs are still functioning as such and therefore cost nothing to enter.

Big monumental attractions like the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, the Arc du Carousel, and the Place de la Concord cost nothing to see (although it may cost to, for example, go up the Eiffel Tower).

There are many public spaces which have great historical interest and cost nothing to look at or walk around in. These include everything from the Jardin du Luxembourg and the Tuileries Gardens to the old Roman arena. You can even throw in the bar, Le Mazet on the rue St. Andre des Arts,  where Jim Morrison had his last drink.

There are street performers may places including the plaza in front of the Centre Pompidou, the market on the rue Mouffetard and, on sundays, around the bridges on the south side of the Ile de la Cite (close to Notre Dame).

You can go on the big Friday night skate for free. It assembles at the Place D'Italie at 10 PM and anywhere from several hundred to several thousand skae thru the streets with a police escort. The route changes each time but the organizers try to take it past interesting sights.

The city iself fascinating to just walk around, especially in the older areas like the Latin Quarter an the Marais where medieval streets and centuries old buildings are everywhere.

Much of the charm of Paris is in its ambiance and that can be absorbed from the terrace of any cafe for the price of a cup of coffee. (Unlike in many countries, you can buy one drink and sit for as long as you like without being harrassed to buy more...that's the main reason a cup of coffee tends to be expensive...you're paying not just for the coffee but for "rent").

Paris is just a great city for walking around and seeing how people live. As insane as it sounds, I'm fascinated by things like supermarkets everywhere I go. I tend to walk around looking at the frozen food and canned goods to see what people are really eating. I love to window shop, check out book stores, and just read the menus (which French law requires to be displayed where they can be read before entering). When I see people doing something like playing boules ( a game like Bocchi or lawn bowling) or chess, or kids sailing toy boats, or practicing yoga or martial arts, I stop and check them out. Its amazing how often the supposedly rude or unfriendly French will strike up a conversation, explain what they are doing, or even invite me to join them.

I feel a certain sort of envy for your situation because this will all be new to you and that is a great gift. I have seen and experienced all this many times but to be young and in Paris for the first time reminds me of Wordsworth's words, "Bliss it was in that dawn to be alive, but to be young was very heaven."
