Question:

What cities to visit near Paris or Frankfurt?

Hi,

I will be going to Paris in early September and from there will go to Frankfurt to visit relatives. I will be in Frankfurt for 9-10 days, which I think it too long for Frankfurt!

So I want to visit some other cities for 2-3 days. I can either visit cities within couple of hours away from Paris, or cities in Belgium or Switzerland or cities not too far from Frankfurt. We can either rent a car or take the train, so any city within 4 hours of Paris or Frankfurt would be good.

I know there are many choices and all the European cities are nice in their own way, but if you have been to many cities within the mentioned areas, I would appreciate any recommendations. Thanks!

  1. Go everywhere you can, its worth seeing.

  2. From Paris you can drop in the city of  Brussels ,then in Zurich.

You can visit some  nice city in Germany like Munich,Köln,Düsseldorf,Berlin

    and Hamburg.

  3. Oh, there are so many....read and study before you go....I spent 6 weeks there.....be sure to visit the Louve.....and the Notredame Cathedral....not to mention all the things paris has to offer......

  4. Yeah, that is a long time for bouring Frankfurt :) ... I lived there for three years as a kid, we took a lot of day-trips in the area:

Heidelberg is a wonderful day trip from Frankfurt, it is an hour's drive if you don't get stuck in traffic (or, better, take the train). The university, gardens, the striking views ... really splendid. Wiesaden, the spa where Fyodor Dostoyevsky lost all his money gambling (and therefore the inspiration for his novel The Gambler), is just next door to Frankfurt, another good short day-trip if the weather cooperates. As a kid I loved exploring around the ruins of Königstein, now a suburb of Frankfurt. Or if you have a couple of days, go to Nuremburg and Würzberg -- they are both located east of Frankfurt, on the same highway and train line, but so much to see! Albrecht Dürer, castles, town squares and delicious gingerbread ...

If you do rent a car, you can ride along the Main and Rhein rivers -- lots of little castles, vinyards and villages to explore.

September is also usually harvest festival time --- your relatives in Frankfurt should know about happenings in the area. That part of Germany is known for its apple wine, and harvest festivals involve a lot of apple wine drinking ... yet another reason to take that train.

So actually there is plenty to do around Frankfurt. But yeah, Frankfurt itself ... I guess it's fun if you like banks :)
