  1. Boston for public transit.  Small enough to hoof it if the bus/train stop is not right across the street.

Portland, OR if you want to ride your bike tho...bike riders get no respect in Boston!

  2. I would have to say Los Angeles because of the wide variety of options ranging from an extensive bus route network consisting on MTA primary lines, several municipal carriers and the ever expanding network of subway lines, BRT lines and heavy commuter regional rail. While it may seem slow to the car user, the system works quite well and can get you almost anywhere. As a side note, the entire state of California is now be linked together with mass transit meaning a rider could travel all the way from San Diego in the south through LA and up to San Francisco or Sacramento all by transfering between the various transit systems.

  3. Moscow

  4. When I was in college, Boston had a great system with lots of interlinks and knowledgeable drivers who could tell you how to get to almost any major place.  That was quite a while ago, but it still looked good on last visit.

Dallas is getting to be pretty good, still expanding rail and adjusting bus routes.  Drivers often don't even know details of places on their own routes though.  On line and mobile planning including mobile "When is next bus at this stop?"

  5. Pffftt...HELLOOOO!!

  6. I like Washington, DC.  It has a subway that's very clean, and because it's paid for with cards, the bums don't go on it, because the system won't let them exit if they've been in there too long.  It also has a bus system, and you can live in a neighborhood where you can shop near your home so you don't have to drive.  They also have Flex Cars and Zip Cars, which are parked near metro (subway) stations, and you can rent them by the hour if you need to, so you don't have to own a car for occasional short trips and picking up heavy things at stores.
