Question:

What city in Ireland is most convenient to live in without a car?

I have read other posts about living in Ireland. I currently live in the Seattle, WA area so I can handle the rain and cold weather. I don't really want to bring anything over with me--especially not a car. I'm assuming this limits me to big cities.

I am twenty and quite social...it's very important that I live in a city with young people and somewhat of a social scene. I am looking to live there temporarily, just September through May...I need a change of scenery.

My family is from Ireland and most of it still resides in the Belfast area. I am automatically drawn to Dublin (because we build it up way too much in the US), but I'm open to live in both the northern and southern regions. Thanks!

  1. Check out Galway. Great city for young people.

  2. Im twenty and go out alot in Dublin. I highly recommend it. If you can afford to live close enough then its perfect. Trains are excellent, the buses to the centre are a bit less reliable but still frequent and now theres a tram that goes to and around the city from certain places.

As a 20 year old i can DEFINATELY reccomend it Dublin for you. There are many many many excellent nightclubs and bars and many more facilities such as cinemas, leisure centers and shops then in any other city in Dublin. Plus you'll have no trouble getting a job!!!

    Hope you enjoy Ireland.

  3. Dublin is an obvious option.  But Galway is rocking and the price of every thing there is much more sensible including accomadation.  The  night life is wild too.  You can get about no bother without a car.

  4. I would have to say Galway, I've been here seven years moved here for college and stayed.

I have lived on the edge of the city and public transport is grand.  I moved closer to the city and i haven't used the city public transport for three years.  If you have a bike you will not need public transport.

The city is also well connected to the rest of the country with bus and rail.  It also has a small airport that flys to other parts of Ireland, the UK and France.

From September to May will be perfect for Galway as the city has two colleges and the city is much younger than any other in the country and most cities in Europe.  There is a massive social scene in Galway because of this.

Crime is relatively low, two murders in three or four years i think.

  5. Dublin. There's a lot of public Transport here.
