  1. Duchess' answer isn't quite precise, Berlin does have a lot of history in its architecture nd culture, and Munich alo has some very modern area. To me, the main difference is cost of living, which is way lower in Berlin. Rent, food, transport are all a lot cheaper here, unless you want to live in a hip district like Prenzlauer Berg.

In Munich, on the other hand, rent is particulary costly, and I've heard from friends who live there that they also pay more for food, both if they shop for themselves and if they eat out.

There is also the general assumption that people in Munich are snobbish and chi-chi, but I've never been there so I can't tell you whether that is true. Berliner, on the other hand, have a bit of a reputation for being curt and not exceedingly friendly to strangers, and that can indeed be true, but they warm up to you once you get to know them.

  2. Both are really cool. You can't go wrong with either...This is a coin toss...

  3. Personally, I didn't like either one with 7 years in the military in Germany.

I loved smaller towns like Bad Kreuznach and the many small villages near there, known as the "Nahe wine region".  But I also liked some of the larger cities such as the Heidelberg/Swetzegen area.  Frankfurt was not my favorite, although transportation there was excellent (love the Deutsch Bahn!!!)

For vacations, I loved the Chiemsee, Garmisch, and Berchesgaten areas in South Germany, but not sure about job availability there.

  4. Well, for a visit both are fine.

To live in, I would definitely choose Berlin. Munich is a very conservative city with a rather right-winged bavarian government.

Berlin is different - so many different cultures living close to each oiher and getting along more or less. And Berlin at night is just thrilling, there is so much to do... Also, it still has that new vibrant feeling, even though bringing down the wall happened almost 20 years ago.

  5. Both are nice, but Munich is very very expensive.

  6. I have lived in both cities, and either one is awesome !

  7. Berlin is a new modern city.

    Munich is old and historic.

So it just depends on what you are looking for.
