Question:

What city is the least friendly to the opposition's fans?

My interest in this question was spurred at a pregame barbeque outside of the Joe Louis Arena before game 1 of the finals against the Pens. Like all fans should, I was disrespecting every Pens fan in sight, regardless of age or gender. I insulted one couple in some way or another, and the woman snapped at me sarcastically, replying "Well it's nice to know everybody is so nice in this city!"

Baffled, I gathered my wit and told her to do some research on the city of Detroit and figure out what she finds to be "pleasant" about the D, and why the h**l she had such misguided depictions of Hockeytown in her mind. I'm not sure what she expected from the city or from the Red Wings fans in particular, but I would hope that most fans would show the same due hostility towards the enemy when they try to walk into your house and cheer for the away team. Who gets the most rowdy, the most hostile, and the most hardcore when it comes to being a hometown fan and defending your own turf?

  1. Philly I hear is unfriendly to the other fans.

But if the Oakland Seals were still in Oakland, my money would be safe that Oakland would have the least friendly fans.

  2. As a Devils fan, I say the Flyers.  When they come here, there are always fan fights...That doesn't even happen with the Rangers.  And the Flyer fans still cuss out Devils fans even when they lose...

  3. new jersy people always get kicked out for fights

  4. What would be wrong with a polite answer to her question? Explain to her that you are "just being a Wings fan...thanks for coming to our City"...and then yell in her ear "PENS SUCK".

Fans can be fans without hostility and disrespect.

  5. Nashville can be pretty brutal, if you go near the cell block.

  6. Good answer Teal town usa. How about IF there was a team in Great Fall's Montana I think they would be the worst. See my Point. I think Calgary has some terrible fans If your wearing an out of town Jersey.

  7. I know I have a short fuse.  I also know that if another team's fan gets in my face, I will start swinging.  One day, you are going to p**s off the wrong person...just a word of the wise.

Fans that feel the need to bully, are towns that produce small sausages.  I have never been to an arena where I have not felt safe.  The most uncomfortable feeling a place I had been to was General Motors Place...even the fans seems liked they didn't like each other...very cold atmosphere.

Candy:  Really I am a nice person...I just have a thing with germs and personal space.

  8. Detroit. My friend went up to detroit for game 2 of the SCF. He had a penguins bumper sticker on his car, which i told him was a bad idea. Long story short, his car got all the windows smashed and 3500 dollars worth of possessions stolen from it. Philly fans try to be brutal, but being from Philadelphia you cant help but laugh at them.

  9. if you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen.

that being said, however, w/ two kids who rely on my paycheck, there are at least several cities on a list where i wouldn't show up w/ my wings jersey. especially if they were playing that night.

(in no particular order of a short list... the first two are easy.)

    - toronto

    - philly

in these two cases, common sense goes a long way. kids eating are more important than team pride. you try to explain team pride to a 2 yr old who has to visit daddy in the hospital w/ several teeth missing and is wearing sunglasses ... all the time. and they don't get a birthday present that year because bills have to be paid for getting that spleen removed. you try to tell them that.

thumbs down for fatherless kids!!! woo hoo!

  10. Philly fans are rude at opposing players and opposing fans.WE are passionate aboot our teams in this city.Do I boo when a player gets up after a injury? No Do I cheer if hes hurt?No..But I will get on the players as much as the next person. Some may call me an a***e or whatever but not ONE time since I've been going to sporting events in this city have I nor anybody with me started a fist fight.Verbal yes and of course I had to end some fights as well but thats because people are not that clever in a battle of words.

  11. (most) Rangers fans hands down I have fun with them when they come to NJ. The sad thing is NYC is closer to the arena then most places in NJ so there are alot of them at Dev's Rag's games. Male capri pants and J-lo glasses are not accesories to a hockey Jersey.

  12. Avs fans are the worst but that is expected when you are a Wings fan.  Stars aren't too bad but some are *****.  I pretty much ignore them because they aren't a rival.  Jealous fans.

  13. "new jersy people always get kicked out for fights"

***** we don't start ****, it's those stupid flyers and rangers fans

  14. Maybe not what you mean by city, but I would have to say Leaf fans are up there for being least friendly.  The difference is they will come to your city (especially in a Canadian city) to disrespect you.  I once had a Toronto fan ask me how I could be a Canadian and not cheer for the Leafs.

And this is coming from a group that hasn't come close to winning a Cup in 40 years.

  15. Well, when I clicked on the question I was going to put Nashville, but based on everything else you put, clearly Detroit has the biggest jackasses. There's a difference between being a good fan and being a dic.

  16. I can't answer for sure because I actually have never been to a game (sad, I know) but the Pens fans actually seemed pretty aggressive when I watched the playoff games this year. They were screaming and shouting and pounding on the glass when a Red Wing bumped into it and when a Penguin and Red Wing were against the glass they still were screaming and shouting, jumping out of their seats...I got a headache from watching and my dad turned down the sound. That's when I lost almost all respect for Pittsburgh fans

but then again, like I said...I actually haven't come in contact with Pittsburgh fans while wearing a Red Wings jersey so I can't say for sure. and obviously there are still a good amount of nice Pittsburgh fans...they were probably just hyper because of the Stanley Cup Playoffs

  17. haha when i went to a pens game<3 it was a rangers playoff game and it was in pittsburgh and there was this guy there w his like 5 yr old daughter.. they were wearing rangers jerseys so EVERYONE in front of the arena started booing them the whole way in.. haha it was the funniest day of my life

  18. Of the places where I've seen games, Nashville had the least freindly fans.

  19. philly, fans once threw batteries at a eagles' game

  20. i'd have to say philly fans.  even malkin said the fans were terrible (mean, rude, etc.) there.  i know they don't hesitate to defend their own, or throw their own into the fire when things get ugly.

  21. It's not really a trip to Ottawa until one of the Sens faithful suggests I do that which is physically impossible.  Of course, it must be tiresome that 1/3 of the crowd is wearing blue and white.

Buffalo can be pretty rough at times; the Ontario licence plates don't help things in Buffalo (we park in a garage and take any Leafs paraphenalia away from sight).  Again, safety in numbers (1/4 to a third are Leafs fans).

Philly fans let you have it pretty much the whole time.  If you're going to a game there...have thick skin and a pair of ear plugs.  Queuing for the washroom or for food/drink...even the beer lady will tell you that you suck.

If we go to the Western Canadian cities to follow the Leafs I know Calgary and Edmonton are going to have all kinds of suggestions regarding postgame entertainment and opinions about my family's gender.

  22. I have only seen a game outside of my teams home arena in Tampa. So I can only speak of them. I was treated well there. Both times I have went there for Bolt/Cats games. There were the usual Drunk fools, But that is expected. I only treat an opposing fan badly if they do it first and it is unreasonable. Which rarely happens. I go to enjoy myself and meet some nice people. I have told a fool to go get a dictionary and look up the words sportsmanship and class and get back to me. Still have not heard from them. maybe they don't know how to read. Oh well

  23. I have to imagine philly is a tough crowd...MSG in a Devils jersey is never too much fun either

The leafs fans might be worse though because even though their actions are on par with Philly their recent failure to do anything right makes it so much worse.....

  24. I,m agreeing with the flyers fan.... they can be pretty rude and abnoxious. Not saying leafs fans are angels just saying that flyers fan are pretty rude!

    * Except all the lovely flyers fans on here! *

Homes- "tsk tsk tsk"..... I never knew you were that kind of person! Swinging punches.... wow someone has a short temper! jks jks
