  1. You sjhould take a look at Brooklyn, NY, epsecially in the neighborhoods of Williamsburg and Greenpoint. For many years, these two neighborhoods were full of working class imiigrants, had high crime rates (especially in the 1970's, the 1980's and the early 1990's), and everything in these two neighborhoods were in bad shape. The streets were full of pot-holes, many buildings were in horrible shape, and in one of the neighborhood parks (McCarren Park), the baseball fields were very uneven, had rocks in the infield, and there were holes in the outfield!

But if you look at Greenpoint and Williamsburg now, things are different. Many yuppies and others are now flocking into these neighborhoods. New Condos and other buildings are being built left and right, and the average rent in these neighborhoods have skyrocketed. The crime rate has been going down a lot, and now its a lot safer to walk around some portions of Greenpoint and Williamsburg at night. The city is finally fixing everything at McCarren park and keeps the streets in good shape to attract people into these nieghborhoods. However, due to the rents skyrocketing, many of the working class families had to move out since they can no longer afford the rents, and now Greenpoint and Williamsburg are beginning to look like the well to do neighborhoods in Manhattan.

If anything e-mail me, or look online, and you'll see pictures of how Greenpoint and Williamsburg are being gentrified.

  2. If this question refers to an example of urban gentrification that turned out well, look at some of the sites where the Olympics were held.  Like Barcelona, Spain.  Or look for cities once ravaged by war...riots..."acts of god"

But in general, good EXAMPLES of POOR gentrification occured in the place I live, Chicago, IL.

Best Bet: if you want a positive example, take a look at Urban Renewal post 1990.

Prior to that, a lot of gentrification was de facto segregation.

  3. Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco, Completely gentrified and revamped

Harlem in New York more whites are moving in, artists etc but many old renters are staying also

Boston's North End, young affluent people are moving in and poor are moving out

Fort Lauderdale Florida, whites are replacing blacks in three out of four home purchases property values are rising and the neighborhoods are filling up again

  4. inman park, atlanta

    tribeca, greenwich village, nyc

this places immediately come to mind because there was a time when they were rampant with crime and prostitution, and now out price most americans.  i consider it successful (somewhat) because they still manage to maintain some of it's original character.   some cities/sections that are currently gentrifying are parts of baltimore, parts of philly such as west philly (university city), harlem etc

places that were once wealthy are the mostly likely to effectively gentrify.  in other words, a section of town with old run down mansion townhomes is more likely to gentrify than a neighborhood with sturdy neat working class homes.  there are exceptions to the rule of course.  sections near universities tend to gentrify in a manner consistent with the school ranking, and unique areas in major cities (near water, centrally located, etc) will gentrify as people seek to move from the suburbs closer to their jobs.
