  1. Vancouver.

  2. thats kind of funny because at 22 years old I had the same choice between Calgary and Vancouver but moving from Toronto not nyc.   I chose vancouver but have continued to travel to calgary alot for business.  many times per year so got to know that city too.  I am really glad I wound up in vancouver to live.  The winter is much more palatable than either nyc or calgary.  There are only a few days in the winter where it goes below freezing and we have snow on the ground that sticks.  Most of the winter is hovers at around 40-45, not windy and overcast/drizzley rainy but beats the heck of cold long winters and snow.  Grass stays green all year long, daffodils bloom by february and with the conifers and evergreen bushes around it really never feels like winter.  Calgary has long cold winters from Oct-May and brown and grey are the two colours you'll see. Summers are usually good in calgary with sunny and hot 75-80F   Calgary gets way more sunshine than the coast but its at a cost in coldness.  Summer in vancouver usually dry, 70-80F and May-Oct.  Both have good sking/hiking with Banff an hour and a bit away from calgary. In vancouver you have sking at the local mountains (30-40 minutes) and world class sking in whistler and hour away.  The ocean, the mountains, the climate is great for hiking, cycling most of the year. Kayaking too is popular here.

Cost of living is probably slightly higher in vancouver than calgary although the megaboom there has driven both cost of living, rents and house prices up so they are not far behind Vancouver anymore. House prices tho in vancouver are alot more than calgary. Average house price over the entire Vancouver region is about $750,000  Condos $200-$500K

Calgary probably has way more business opportunties in the corporate world.  there are lots of head offices there and with the oil money flowing there is lots going on. Construction is booming there as well..  vancouver is a much more laid back city both business wise and corporate world wise.    That said vancouver is slightly larger with the suburban cities in the mix and more going on in movie production, tourism and olympic 2010 coming and lots of infrastructure going ion too so construction big here as well..

Vancouver is way more multicultural than calgary with lots of chinese, indians, blacks from both US and newer refugees from somalia and sudan.   Calgary is known as Canada's Texas.  Red necks and cowboys still alive and well there.

It will probably come down to where you find the best job

try http://www.monster.ca for alberta region and for Vancouver try http://www.vancouverjobshop.ca

I think you'll like either city but if you can locate in vancouver with the same type of money as Calgary... life style I'd pick Vancouver.

  3. Vancouver, without question.  You'd go insane coming from NYC to Calgary.........I'd forget Calgary totally if I were you.
