  1. It varies by the state you live in. All require certification, not just graduating from classes.

Most state colleges will have an opportunity  to gain the certs, course syllabus should be online for the program. It wont be years, it will be weeks.  You might want to budget a year for it if you arent studious or have to work. Some departments will require basic firefighting as well.

  2. It all varies state by state.  You must take a course accredited by the Department of Transportation.  For my state, Ohio, you must take an Ohio EMT-Basic (144 Hours) course, which can be found at most local JVS schools.  Some fire departments host them, however, they usually host them through a training agency, such as the JVS.  Once you become an EMT-Basic, you can choose to remain at that level or move up to either and EMT-Intermediate or a Paramedic.  If you are thinking of being a Paramedic, don't was your time with Intermediate.  Most JVS schools do not offer Paramedic.  Most of the time, you will have to attend a well established traininig academy that specializes in that type of training or a local college that offers that course.  Try to contact your local fire department or EMS agency to see where they go to get their training at.  Now like I said, every state is different.  Some states don't even have Intermediates.  Every state has different requirements and certification levels.  You can go to www.nremt.org, which is the National Registry of EMTs and see just which states require what.  Once you complete the course, you must take a certification exam and practical exam.  I will warn you that this is difficult to take.  If your state is a national registry state, the test is difficult and the proctors are strict.  You will receive 3 chances to take the written exam and practical exam and you must pass both in 3 tries, or you will have to take a 40 hour refresher course.  After the refresher course, you get 3 more tries.  Failure to pass it again in 3 tries results in having to take the entire course over with again.  I know guys who have done this before.  Plus, once you receive your certification, you only have it for a set amount of time before having to recertify.  For instance, in Ohio, your certification lasts for 3 years.  During those 3 years, you must complete continuing education.  For an EMT-Basic- 40 Hours, Intermediate-60 Hours, and Paramedic-92 Hours.
