  1. Australia is the size of Europe or Continental USA. The weather patterns are greatly varied and diverse. It would be better for you to research by buying a few travel guides for the specific places within Australia you intend to visit.

For example, here in Sydney it has been raining almost non stop for 13 days, which it hasn't done in 15 years according to the weather reports. Hobart, in Tasmania would be abysmally cold, but somewhere in the far north such as Port Douglas in Queensland would be very pleasant, even in May.

Having said all of that, weather varies from day to day, like it does almost everywhere in the world, so come prepared for what you expect once you have read those travel guides you're going to now buy.

  2. May will be Autumn so usually gets a tad chilly. But it depends where you're from. You may find it really hot if you're from Europe or really cold if you live somewhere hotter.

It also depends where in Aus you're going. I live in Sydney and this time of the year I usually just end up wearing jeans, a t shirt and a if its cold then a jumper (just a hoodie, not a thick one!) But it can also get hot so pack some shorts and tshirts...that's what I'm wearing right now!

  3. There is a line that runs the width of australia from Rockhampton in Queensland to Western Australias Pilbara region. this is the tropic of capricorn so all areas above that will have beautiful weather in may. they have 2 seasons the wet and the dry .May is the start of the dry. so only light clothing there. If your on the GoldCoast or Brisbane we are in semi tropics. Could get a few cool evenings where a light jacket is needed. Anywhere down South especially melbourne Canberra region you are near the snowy mountains. which has ski fields and it can get bitterly cold there. Sydney has a mild climate some days can be wet and cold but others can be rather mild. Perth can get rather cold at night but the days can be very nice Just a little colder than Brisbane . So really it depends where you are going in Australia

  4. If you come from a place where you get six feet of snow in winter, then no, you don't need that kind of clothing unless you're going snow-skiing, in which case you could hire or buy it here.

As another poster said, Australia has a wide variety of climates, so you need to research the places you're going to specifically.  That said, the northern (tropical) half, with few exceptions is mild to hot in May, with little rain.  The southern (temperate) half is cool to mild, with rain at times. A wind chill factor will of course drop the perceived comfort level!

Currently in Melbourne it is unseasonally dry and warm.  Our weather has been peculiar for quite a while now, so it's anyone's guess what the winter will bring [June to August].  Usually it's pretty cool and wet, with minimums under 8 degrees Celsius, but it hasn't been like that for so long that maybe that pattern is history.

  5. we are in the middle of autumn at the moment so maybe lite jackets some warm jumpers and pants  but some t-shirt and short will always come in hand. As our climate is different to yours .
