I'm going to India for 3 weeks, and all I am allowed to bring is one backpack. Does anybody have any advise on what to bring?

  1. Only bring *pattern* clothes! Things that you like, that fit, that you wouldn't mind having copies made of here. True, you can be measured. But if you bring any clothes as a pattern, it will be easier for the tailor and you are more likely to get what you want. Otherwise, don't bring any clothes other than what's on your back, you can get the rest here in India much more cheaply than anything in your native place.

  2. I'm always wearing cotton or linen shirts on. Credit card & money besides.

It is better for you to buy clothes in India.

  3. Cotton, lose and light in colour. Wherever you stay in India there are a million and one places that offer a laundry service so don't break your back carrying lots of clothes, enough to last 3-5 days should be fine. Shoes are a fraction of the price there but like the clothes they are often not the best quality. You do not need a medical kit as medicens are widely available, again at a fraction of the cost. A small torch will be handy, a guidebook, and notepad and a pen or two, a lightweight thin towel (they dry quickly in hot climates). Forget the ipod, your in India. listen to the sounds, speak to the people.

    Hope that is of use

  4. Bring none.It is cheaper to buy from India.Even branded clothes are fabricated in India.

  5. anything that's made of cotton. you'll be sweating your a** off there

  6. dress modestly.  wear things like long cotton skirts, cotton pants and loose tops.  dont dress in tight tops and mini skirts and short shorts, Its disrespectful for one and men there will stare and make degrading comments to you or try to touch you.  Just remember they are not used to seeing things like that and have an image of westerners of being easy and that gives them a chance to believe that.  (im not saying all of india is like that or all indian men are like that either)  Just be safe and have fun.  Respect their culture and modesty rather than trying to convert them to accept you.
