Question:

What clothing is appropriate for Marrakech?

Hi. I am off to Marrakech in a couple of weeks and I have searched the internet for advice on appropriate clothing for a woman but have had mixed suggestions. I am not going to where revealing tops etc and will ensure I have a pashmina/scarf to cover my shoulders. It is more the leg wear that I am confused about. Some people say that skirts below the knee are fine, where as others say that you must have ankles covered at all times. Has anyone been recently who can offer some advice?

Thank you in advance!

  1. Myself, I wouldn't wear shorts there but I have worn trousers to just about knee length.  I also make sure not to wear low fronted tops.  Have a good time.

  2. Having lived in a muslim country my advice is to be as conservative as you can.  You are a visitor in their country, so I have a lot of respect that you are asking this question and even thinking about it.

You have to remember that what is not revealing for us can be for them.  So if you imagine the majority of their women are wearing clothes that cover to their wrists, and ankles, and then you walk in with shorts and a strappy top - it is pretty different.

My theory is you don't want to draw too much attention to yourself.  On that note tourists do go there so it isn't like you need to totally cover up but be respectful.

I actually find wearing long skirts are the coolest thing in the heat - but that is my preference.  I would say below the knee, and not tight.  Top half, things that are not low, or tight.  When i say low, i mean not showing your cleavage.  Wear tops that have at least covered your shoulders.  Anyway it is hot, you want to get burned on your shoulders?

A bit of a long answer, but hope it helps.
