I would not be a tourist; I would be a student for one summer. Do Germans typically dress fancy or do they dress with T-shirts and jeans? Any other suggestions? Thank you very much!

  1. wear black

  2. Wait till you get there, but one secret to blend in is to walk the same pace as everyone else... if you watch people, they are all walking at the same pace.

  3. I would go naked

  4. Suspenders and puffy green pants.

  5. The main thing I have always noticed is obsessive colour coordination.  Like only wear 1-2 main colours, and keep all accessories the same colour.  Clothing is also quite reasonably priced over there, so it might be nice to get a few new things while you are there.  As mentioned before, shoes are king of different in each country, so just get a pair when you arrive.

  6. You do not state what city you will be in...possibly Heidelberg??  Students dress casually...however it would be a good idea to have at least one dress-up outfit for special occasions. If you attend church...in Germany people wear dark clothing...black mostly...to church. You would want to dress up for a concert or nice dinner out. When dining out...when you receive the bill...always pay the bill..rounded out to the next dollar. If you wish to add a "tip"...hand it together with your bill. NEVER leave cash money on a table for a tip...it is considererd rude...in Germany.  If you are on your own for meals...you can get coffee and a pastry at any corner bakery for breakfast very  reasonably....buy lunch items like rolls, lunchmeats, cheese, fresh fruit, etc. from outdoor market and picnic- lunch. Food in Germany is safe, and very delicious. You dont have to worry about that.

The side-sling backpack is very popular in europe.

I would advise you to avoid any clothing or accessories that scream "amerikaner".  No labels, no caps...no red white and blue combined. No t-shirts with american slogans. Blend in...for personal safety. For added protection, be sure you have a hidden money belt under your clothing..for extra money and passport.  Sightseeing is free, beautiful scenery everywhere for walking. Bikes are available for rental...almost everywhere.  People are reserved but friendly and polite. Many Germans speak english. All students speak english...but some eldely people may not. You should have no problems...ENJOY.

  7. Hideous knitware

  8. Most young Germans dress with jeans and t-shirts, they don't dress up alot. But they do keep up with fashion trends

  9. They dress just like Americans do.  While you are there, if you get a chance, go to Rothenberg...the walled city with brick-paved roads.  It is a tiny little town and my absolute favorite.  Here is a link to a photo of it and you can also see how people are dressed.

  10. Black. The biggest thing to do to blend in is wear European style shoes, if you really want to bland in. I'm not sure why, but shoes always tend to give away the nationality. If you are an old man, for example, wear wool socks and sandals.

If you have an H&M near you, that will have plenty of clothes that fit the European standard.

Stay away from hip packs (Unless you are a competetive cyclist), baseball caps (Unless you are a German rapper), jogging suits (unless you are Russian Mafia), and backpacks with flags, buttons, and pins on it (Unless you are north american.)
