On the way I will also be stopping in new york for about 3 to 4 days. I will be going to delhi , agra, and mathura for about 4 days. Then i will be in chennai for about 12 days. And I will be in Bangalore for 5 days. And I will also be going to kodaikanal for about 5 days to visit a holy place but will be staying in a regular 4 start hotel. If you could list out the clothing to take that would be great. I am a 26 year old female and am going with husband and I am of indian origin but brought up in the states. I will be visitng my in-laws in chennai also. Is it appropriate to wear 3-4 length skirts in delhi and chennai?

  3. while visiting ur inlaws, be sure to wear something indian, maybe a salwar suit if not a sari. if they're not too conservative, a long skirt with a good top will do. it's really hot here in may so pack suitable fabrics like cotton etc. i wouldn't really recommend too short skirts coz all they'll do is attract eyes of eveteasers which is the most common thing in india.

  4. Well when you are visiting your in laws, wearing a western skirt is the last thing you should wear. Something more 'indian' would work with them. I don't live in India but from what I know about old people there, they don't really appreciate too much skin exposure. Also I think its summer time during April and may so you would want to be prepared for that. When you are visiting a holy place try to wear something less revealing, people tend to stare at you if u do. Other than that, i'm sure you'll have a good time in India : )

  5. kodaikanal will be cold and you may need sweaters. Better you may wear a salwar-kamiz while meeting your in laws. skirts are frowned upon in India.

  6. Climate will be hot and dry in Delhi, Agra and Mathura. Summer temperature of Delhi, Agra and Mathura would be ranging from 40 to 45 degree C. Temp in   Chennai would be 36 to 40 degree C with a high humidity. In Bangalore temp will be around  32 to 36 degree C.

You can wear mini or macro mini skirts in Delhi and Chennai if you are comfortable with them.

  7. If your in laws are typical Indian kind, preferably wear a Salwar if you find wearing Saree is difficult to accept as custom dress of South, If you wear Saree you will be praised and become a very humble, obedient person easy to earn a very good name.

Otherwise all the places you are calling are warmer and hotter and possible to wear cotton fabrics of your choice of design be it skirts, trousers, etc, etc*

  8. Jeans are fine, but when it's hot, you'll wish you were in a nice cotton salwar or churidar!

People do wear skirts, even minis .. but the general population will view this as either "loose", or "cheap" or "western" or "English" or "Christian". If your in-laws are Hindu then wearing a midi skirt is not exactly going to endear you to them. I'd recommend you pick up two or three salwar sets in  Delhi .. you can get nice stuff from a place called Fab India or Shoppers Stop or Westside (I'm not sure if they have branches in Delhi but I know these shops in Bangalore have nice "mix and match" stuff where you can pick out nice cottons, handloom etc. )

If you want to wear skirts, you could go for the wonderful "gypsy" type skirts that are easily available .. very hippy .. ankle length or a little short of it.

Wearing pants is fine. Loads of girls wandering around in jeans and t-shirts. Also check out "kurti's" .. these are short kurtas .. similar to the salwar khamis top half ie the khamis .. but they are short and end at the hips and you can wear them with pants.

In Delhi and up north, I think covering up is a good idea unless your skin is strong as armour, cos there is a LOT of sexual harassment and leching there.

April May is the HOT season so just take light clothes. Lacy synthetic underwear will be a nightmare so bring cottons. a lot of NRIs tend to do their underwear shopping here, by the way .. Jockeys, Triumph, Lovable all available at the malls, good quality and much cheaper than abroad. Underwire bras feel gross in Indian summers but you get really  nice cotton ones. A brand called Enamor has really nice comfy and pretty pastel ones, under 300 Rs.

Take one warm jacket for Kodai (like something you'd wear in early spring in the US .. no need for the heavy winter jackets) in case it's cold at night.

Pick up some nice cooling prickly heat powder after you come (or bring it with you if you like) . Something with sandalwood will feel good, or else Johnson & Johnson's Baby Prickly Heat powder. Also be sure to bring mosquito repellent .. you get nice liquid ones in the US that don't smell at all like insect repellents .. they come in pump spray bottles and they contain DEET. You might also want to bring some hand sanitiser (the gel stuff that you can clean your hands with when there's no water, or for when someone wipes their nose or coughs just before reaching out to shake your hand .. !)

Although both these are available in India at pharmacies and supermarkets. The brand Himalaya Herbals is good for hand sanitisers and will be available at all Health & Glow pharmacies as well as other outlets.

Chennai will be REALLY humid so you'll want LOOSE clothes for there. T-shirts with a lot of lycra/spandex will feel like h**l.

If comfort is the main thing, then go for baggy cotton pants with kurtis, or else ethnic handloom type kurtas with ready made cotton salwars or churidars (those are the non-baggies with lots of folds around the ankles). they're just the easiest things to move around in comfortably.

sorry I'm jumping all over the place .. but anyway .. hope some of this is useful for you! Good luck and have fun. It'll be a blast.

Don't bring too many clothes .. enough for a week at the most. Then come here and SHOP. You'll love the shopping here.

  9. april-may is summer here,  so only colorful cottons/jeans is suitable.

to impress in-laws salwar suits / churidar suits should bowl them over.

for special puja occasions with in-laws a sari / or ankle length skirt would be appropriate

otherwise jeans/ draw string pants/ track pants with a top and a stole ( can double up to cover skin - just in case ) is perfect.

3/4 ths are fine when alone with hubby dear otherwise a strict no-no to show legs.

everything will be fine so just be yourself.

  10. Hi, mid April to mid may would be summer time ... So no need to worry about cloths... As I know you can wear anything you want  in Delhi, Chennai, Banglore... .   a little care need in agra, mathura, kodaikanal....

    Enjoyyy :)

  11. the places you are visiting inn India would be quite hot during mid-April to mid-May. You should wear cool clothes- preferebly in cotton and light coloured. Skirts will be O.K but not in heavy fabric.

Avoid to wear revealing clothes particularly at religious places.
