What college team is faster?

One with a spread attack with 5 WRs

Or

One with 2 WR 2RB 2 TE

What defense is faster?

One with 6 DBS to counter a 5 WR look

or

A basic 4-3

I am so over the speed conversation regarding college football. It all depends on perception. Obviously if you run a 5 WR look you look faster than other teams that run a pro-style offense...Same token on defense...You may look faster if you are trying to stop a 5 wr look. Since DBs are faster than lineman or linebackers.

These SEC teams are not faster than others, they just need their fastest players on the field to offset their opponent. Its so funny to see Michigan beat Florida and it comes down to intangibles but when Ohio State losses it is all about them being too slow.

  1. SEC is the fastest conference hands down..Research has been done on this...The SEC has more players in the NFL at the speed positions, DB,LB,WR...

The Big 10,Big 12,ACC etc have the most players at the size positions, OL,DL,FB etc etc..

I will look for the link but ESPNs Colin Cowherd mentioned this article about a month ago..

  2. The offensive scheme has no relevance to which team is faster.

DESIGNING an offensive scheme SHOULD have relevance to how much team speed is available.

Jeremy is absolutely correct, there is more team speed in the SEC.  There are more performing skill players in the Pros in the SEC. The gap has narrowed marginally over the last 10 years, but it has narrowed, because other conferences know they need to catch up.  The depth of speed has always been better utilized in the south, particulary since Jimmy Johnson started fielding teams with LBs playing DE, Safeties playing LB, and Corners playing Safety. Everyone tried to imitate him - the speed players (most of whom come from Florida (by a wide margin), then Texas and California) tend to stay closer to home in the south because of cultural reasons. This is changing with strong team speed at schools like Illinois because of their coach coming up from the SEC.  But it will be a long while - if ever - before parity is achieved.  I've lived all over this country and seen many games in many stadiums firsthand, played the game at a high level and know what to look for. I can tell you the play in the SEC is consistently faster over a broader number of positions than it is elsewhere.  I have no axe to grind on the subject - it simply is true. The real test is if we can "root" the PAC 10s "top talent" out of the Rose Bowl - which gives them an instant advantage over Big Ten teams and see how they fare elsewhere.  I think the PAC 10 lack of depth will be well revealed. As for those who continue to want to "sip the KOOL-AID, good luck with that.  Performance just doesn't support any of it.
