We are getting ready to build a house and are trying to pick colors... We want light colored wood cabinets, a neutral colored floor (in the tan or gray family) and nuetral countertops that compliment the floor. What color appliances should we have- black or white?

  1. What color do YOU like?  Everyone here has their own personal preference, but you are the one who has to live with your choice.  What I did with mine was to use all white appliances except for the dishwasher, which is black.  My cabinets are a medium hickory, and the white dishwasher would have looked weird.  One disadvantage to black, though.  When it's clean, my dogs rub their noses all over, thinking it's another dog, so it gets messy, then I clean it, then they rub their noses on it, etc.......  Good luck.

  2. tough answer

White will clash with the wood (not real bad but would need help from other elements to make it work) but goes well with blues and greys

Black is very strong and would dominate the kitchen if you don't have other strong colors.

Bisque is the best choice color wise for what you want to do but is being phased out and if you could find everything you need for the kitchen in bisque now if you ever had to replace some thing you might be in a bind.

that brings us to stainless steel goes with everything but looks industrial and requires a little more work to keep it looking good.

personaly I would do black I would cover the refer and the dishwasher with wood to match your cabinets but I would also choose some very strong colors in the counters and window coverings  hope that helps

  3. Neither--both are dated. Black is less dated than white. Go with stainless steel--they last longer and don't look as dated. Plus, if you're going so neutral with colors, if you do white, you will have the blandest kitchen in the world.

  4. As a kitchen & bath designer, I encounter many people who want to play it safe & I understand the tendency to go neutral , but be careful not to have the end product looked washed out.  You need some contrast in there - if you have light cabinets, you need to put something a little darker on the countertop or floor.  Keep it in the same tones & make sure it is "complementary".  I suggest looking at a bunch of kitchen magazines to get an idea of how this might look put together.  You can still be neutral & safe without being washed-out.  That being said, I agree with the other poster about using stainless appliances - there are many options out there nowadays that have "fingerprint-proof" products, if that's a concern.  But if that is not in the cards for you, I would certainly choose black appliances over white appliances.  Good luck with the house!
