Also why is it blue or blueish green when you look at it from a far? Why does the color disappear when you scoop up some of the water in your hand or get close to it? Does it seem that way to anyone else, or maybe i'm seeing doubles? Do you see my point of this question? Do you see the ocean as a mystery at times. Does the ocean get its color from the sky?

  1. Yes, the ocean generally takes its color from the sky. That's why the ocean looks so blue on islands in the Caribbean (where there's lots of sunshine and little pollution) and so gray on cloudy days. Water itself is colorless, and so the "color" of the ocean is merely a reflection of the surroundings.

Some bodies of water (not necessarily the ocean) can get a bit of a tint depending on the contents of the water. For instance, a pond that has a lot of plant life may have a green tinge to it from all the stuff floating around. A polluted river will look brown due to the pollutants that have been dumped in it.

Since the ocean is (generally) clean, it usually just takes on the color of the sky. The bluer the sky, the bluer the water.

  2. color of the ocean is due to how the light waves are bent and absorbed the red end of the visible light spectrum is absorbed first leaving blue and the higher end.  Color also depends on the mineral content of the water.

  3. depends on the climate in florda its blue in maine its a blue green in the bahamas it looks more green than blue
