Black is the absence of all light so it is not a color.

Black is actually not a color; neither is white.  They are values.  They darken or lighten other colors when mixed (such as in paint mixing).  This is from an art perspective.

Also black is considered the "absence" of light.  White, in the color spectrum is the result of all colors (in light).
