  1. The cere becomes brown and crusty.


  2. There is more than just the color of the cere.  Parakeets' ceres turn their gender-respective colors around 6 months, and you are sure of their genders aroung 7 months.  They are sexually mature by 8 months.

    However, I strongly discourage you from breeding.  As a common Answerer on Y!A always says, do you have top-quality birds or pet-store quality birds?  This means, did you buy the keet from a professional breeder, or from just any old pet store?  There are several studies conducted that shows that parakeets in pet stores are more susceptible to problems in the future, rather than the private bird breeders' birds.
