What color light do plants grow best and worst in? use ROYGBIV?

Out of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet, what color light do plants grow best in and why? which color do they grow worst in and why? I tried searching the web but couldn't find anything.

  1. best in red, worst in violet because red has the highest frequency and violet has the lowest (orange is 2nd, yellow 3rd etc)


  2. worst is green, because plants are green, so they cant pick it up near as well. violet is the best, because it has the highest energy. i did this experiment already.

If I had to make an educated guess (and this is just a guess mind you) I'd say best would be violet and worse would be red.  I postulate this because plants use light as a source of energy for photosynthesis and violet light is the higher frequency and therefore energy of the visual light spectrum and red is the least.

  4. Using a spectrophotometer, you will find that violet and blue are completely absorbed and have the highest energy content.  A portion of red light is also strongly absorbed by seed plants.  The other colors are weakly absorbed.

    Seaweeds with different pigments would have a different absorption spectrum.
