The color of my house is gray and white with red brick. Concrete (gray) winding side walk, gray cobblestone paths, and white park bench?

What color of mulch should I use?

  1. rich red, with out a doubt.

  2. I would just go with cedar chips or bark chips. They start out reddish-brown, but eventually fade to a grayish brown.

  3. is it just mulch or are there plants in there aswell?

    can you add ground cover?

it sounds quite traditional. stay in line with that.

  4. They make mulch the color of dark soil, or black.  It's what my mother, a master gardener, prefers.  I know that my local Wal-Mart carries it, so I'm sure you can get it anywhere.

  5. Sort of subjective, innit? I personally like mulches that look as natural as possible.  If you can find the dark brown/black stuff that looks like rich soil, that would be my first choice, but it can be a bit pricey.  Fine cedar chips are nice -- they start out a bit chocolaty-looking for my taste, but they soon fade to a far more sedate and soilish-looking greyish-brown.

Just don't use that dyed stuff.  Not only is the color really garish, IMO, but the dye will actually *run* when it gets wet, and if you live somewhere where it snows in the winter, you'll have lovely pink snow on all your beds.

  6. Red cedar for sure. dont buy black mulch. it fades real quick and looks like c**p or old dirt if you will
