What color should I paint my living room? (pic included)?

ok, our house needs a LOT of work, but I want to start with the living room since that's the first room people walk into when they come into my house. The only thing I can't change (or don't want to) is this curtain that goes around the opening to the kitchen, that has our family coat of arms on it. My husband really likes it, and we spent a lot of money on these curtains. I also have two windows that have these curtains on them. So what color can I paint these walls so that it looks a little more warm and inviting but would still go with these curtains? I sooo want a brick red room, but I'm afraid that wouldn't go with these curtains. http://www.flickr.com/photos/25323674@N02/2717565203/

  1. i would also go beige or light tan, but not a yellowy one. lt beige/tan would make the curtains you like stand out, as a focal point.

I think you could have brick red accessories, but more than that is going to clash with those curtains - which appear on my computer screen to be burgundy.

Unless there is some yellow tone in the curtains in reality, brick red just won't work, at least not near the curtains.

some other room gets to be brick red.

  2. Sorry !

but I really don't see the whole room , I can only see the door way and part of the kitchen, what colour is your sofa?

I will do my best to help you out if you can only tell me these things.

In that case I would go into a blue gray colour

get rid of the border to create a larger view and hang your curtains in another way but not at the space where it is now.

  3. Wow, I think a soft, creamy, slightly yellow so it's warm BEIGE would go wonderfully.

    Beautiful curtains, mmm.

  4. i think a cappuccino color would be pretty with those curtains.

  5. Okay, I will agree that the curtains are nice, not necessarily draped in the manner that they are, but still, nice. I think I might move them however to a long wall that has a picture window, draping them along the top, much as a three ppiece set would look with the other two windows covered in the same material.

Swinging doors would be a good accent for the living room as well as keeping the view of the kitchen uunder wraps until you can do something about that appearance. If you want the living roomm to be warm, yet striking, I think a medium shade of beige on the walls would be nice, and run a dark green border around the four walls, about 32" from the floor, as a form of wainscoating to give the room some interest. Paint the ceiling an off-white in a semi gloss finish to increase light reflction downward. I would put a satin finish on your walls to help hide the blemishes and flaws inherrent in old sheetrock. Hope this helps you

  6. Brick red, and those curtains is a no.

I think you should paint the room brick red, and trash the curtains completely.

  7. it appears like the door is leading to a different house,

  8. I'm afraid you're right about the brick red.  It appears that the curtains are either a very dark red or a burgandy or maroon color.  It's hard to tell.  I'd stick with a soft gold color or a warm cream.  You want something to contrast with the curtains and not make them disappear.  With the combo of burgandy and gold you could use some green or choc brown accent colors.  Good luck!

  9. I think that a rich, welcoming color would be Safari Tan.  It's not yellow, it's not beige, it's more of a deeper softer natural yellow.

It will compliment the color of the curtains AND the regalness of your coat of arms.

You are correct red would clash with them.  Even the deep burgandy would be too much for your curtains.

    I hope that helps!!

I'd love to see it when you are done!

  10. I see a Dark Honey Yellow going with that room. A warm color tends to be brown. I think Honey yellow would be plenty dark and give that royal colored curtain some subtle contrast.
