Question:

What color should I use to paint walls or accent them with a black and white theme?

I'm getting tired of looking at my white walls with white trim and white accent wall. Everything in the room is black or white.

I've heard red is the way to go with black and white but I don't want the room to look smaller or so... RED.

Is there another color I can paint my walls? Or a way to use red on the walls that isn't solid red? Should I do the window and door trims? Or the doors?

Thanks for any help I'm not good at decorating but I want a sophisticated adult look :)

  1. Hot pink or lime green walls.Maybe just one wall, with the others a softer coordinating color. Pull the colors out with accent pillows, rugs and swag curtains.A swirl pattern black and white rug, black and white  checked pillow covers, an interesting black duvet cover with a pretty white throw at the corner of your bed. White lace or simple tailored pillow shams. Add a surprise splash of totally different color with a vibrant cover to your bedside bench, say a purple if you go with pink or turquoise if you go with lime walls.. Make a homemade headboard with plywood, foam and white demin fabric.you can hang the headboard to your wall. Hang small black and chrome wall reading lamps on each side of your bed.Hang white sheer curtains and then a black or bench color sheer swag over the white sheers. Or for a more dramatic look, hang black sheers with a white swag. There are great posters in black and white. Incorporate the bench color on your walls.

    have fun.

  3. play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find colors that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the "painted" rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:

Although red does look very dramatic with B&W, you're not necessarily limited to that choice - especially if you're not a fan of the color. Other colors like blue, purple, pink, orange... would all work. I think a green like "grandview" (# 6466) would look terrific with the B&W.

You can also take a photo of your house & upload it to the makeover gallery on this website:

You can get color suggestions & they'll photoshop them onto your room so that you can get an idea of what it will look like.

  4. I agree with the answer that said that with black and white being neutral, you can do just about anything you want. To tie your wall color in, you could add a couple accents (pillows, vase, picture frame, etc.) around the room. But on that note, our bedroom is all in black and white as well and I've painted the walls a light yellow color. I saw it in a decorating magazine and fell in love with the combination of the colors. It is a light color so it isn't overpowering, but it isn't too calming like a blue because I have a workspace in there too.

I would leave the doors and trim white, I think it's a classic, sophisticated look, but also ties in the white part of your black and white.

Other good color combos might be a rich pink color, or a funky green color.

  5. I agree, white walls are the worst.  White trim is the best, though.  Stay with white on your door and molding around your windows.  As far as red on your walls if you feel uncomfortable with a red room, don't go there, then.  Opt for a golden color on the walls and red accent if you like red.  Otherwise, midnight blue is a great accent color with black and white rather than red if you're not a fan of red, but you can still paint your walls in a golden color and incorporate blue, red, gold through throw pillows and throw rugs.

  6. Black and white are neutral so any color that you want will stand out very nice.  If you don't want to much color just paint one wall, like the wall where the head of your bed is.  It will give the room some pop, but not make your room look small.

Blue is suppose to be a calming color so that would be a nice color for a bedroom.

  7. Any bright color will make black and white pop.  I happen to like the color of a granny smith apple with black and white!  But red, royal blue, mustard yellow, orange, or turquoise would also work!  You could

buy some stretched canvasses at Michael's and paint them the color you want to pop your black and white with.  Then add some more accessories to the room--pillows, throws, area rug, etc.  One advantage is you can change out the accessories and have a whole new look!

    Good Luck!
