What color should i match the staircase?

the living room's hard wood floor has a red monhagony color, the railing is English oak color, now i am replacing the carpet on the stairs with hardwood steps, should i choose the red monhagony or the English oak color of the railing which was previously painted by the builder. there is about 1meter away between the living room and the stairs going up the 2nd floor

  2. I would choose the mahogany color, so that the living room and stairs are tied together. You might want to consider either repainting the railing or incorporating the English oak color somewhere in the living room.

  3. Mahagony for sure.  If you try to match the railing and it's not perfect it will look like you tried and failed.  And with the space between the living room and stairs if the red is not an excact match it may not show.  Good luck.

  4. I think you want to have continuity of color if you have a samll space so the red mohagony should be picked up but if its a rather spacious area then it should compliment the 2. Thats just my opinion.

  5. Both those colors are going to be hard to match and it will be really obvious if you don't get it perfect.  And both being dark, they will make the stairwell very dark.

    Maybe go for a neutral tone, maybe one of the textured carpets.  They wear really well, and using a natural tone won't distract from the beautiful floorboards or the existing wood.
