  4. funny you asked because we just moved into our new home and I have white cabinets and black marble counter tops and I went with off white tile with darker white swills in it and it looks great and easy to keep clean too.The only thing that I can give you extra advice on is go for the closes grout line as possible.I didn't know that you could go as close as almost not having a line at all.Grout lines will change colors if they get wet or something else is spilled on them.Good luck and have fun

  5. Black faux marble tiles with white swirling would compliment both colors well. Best of luck. :)

  6. I agree with the respondent who answered medium wood.  It's a truly classic look with the white cabinets and black tops.  You can go with engineered wood or wood laminate if you want that look.  Both will handle moisture better than solid wood.

Another really nifty option for a great kitchen floor is Marmoleum Click.  I wrote about this product in my kitchen design blog this week, so you might want to check out its benefits there:

    Two I'll mention right away:

    >It's soft underfoot, so your legs and back will tire less from standing on it for long periods

    >There are no grout lines to deal with.

There are a number of patterns you can create with this product, depending on whether you want a more classic, contemporary or retro look, (like the pic with my blog posting).  You can also install it as a solid color, or a solid with a color band to define your kitchen.

Check it out -- and good luck with your project.

  7. Yes, the black and white checkboard for sure...in either tile or laminate.  I perosnally, depending on the size of the kitchen, would like 2' tiles, black and white checkboard, instead of the average 1'.  I saw it in a house we were considering buying and I thought it looked fantastic.

  8. You can do hardwoods in light, medium or dark stains.  Or choose a tile that is neutral like a cream or similar.  I wouldn't do a heavy dark tile color.  Hardwoods of any color add warmth.  Tiles do not.  What are you doing in the rooms that butt up to the kitchen?  That will also determine which direction you should go and how contemporary you want it to look or not.  Get samples, bring them home and lay them for a time to see what the color does for the room and it's surrounds.  That is always best.
